Koen Helmuth

Downing Ranch

Koen Helmuth a native of Watford, North Dakota is studying Natural Resource Management at North Dakota State University. He will be spending his summer as an intern at Downing Ranch near Dunning.

Koen was raised on an Angus cow-calf operation and was active in sports, 4-H, FFA, and numerous side jobs throughout the community. Those early experiences instilled in him the importance of hard work and a belief that doing things right the first time can save a lot of time and trouble later on.

Koen's appreciation for agriculture deepened as he observed the lengths to which people go to persevere through adversity and protect their way of life. Witnessing such courage taught him to value the agricultural industry and its vital role in shaping communities. He is also fascinated by how people in different regions raise livestock. This inspired him to seek an internship where he could learn about livestock management and land stewardship in various areas.

Koen is looking forward to experiencing the small community and ranch life in the sandhills. He's especially interested in learning about rotational grazing, regenerative practices with a production focus, and improving his horsemanship skills over the summer.

In the future, Koen hopes to work in rangeland reclamation to benefit native ecosystems and enhance livestock production. His passion lies in helping land thrive sustainably.

Outside of ranch life, Koen has taken up leather crafting, making spur straps, scarf slides, and more for his friends. His favorite way to start the day is with a cup of coffee.
