Justin Beck

Downing Ranch

Justin Beck is joining the Downing Ranch this summer, coming all the way from Pampa, Texas. He has deep roots in ranching, having grown up working on a ranch that is owned and operated by his father and grandfather. During his summers there, he learned the ins and outs of cattle and agriculture. These early experiences sparked his passion for ranching, and he has been dedicated to building on that foundation ever since.

Justin's passion for ranching deepened while he attended the Ranch and Farm Operations (RFO) program at Clarendon College. This program allowed him to turn his background into a clear plan, inspiring a vision for the legacy he aspires to create.

Justin applied for the Sandhills Ranch Internship Program to broaden his experience and learn new skills. This summer, he is most excited about meeting new people, exploring new land, and continuing to sharpen his ranching skills.

He hopes to enhance his horsemanship and gain insights into managed grazing while working alongside the Downings. His long-term goal is to take over the family ranch, continue building it, and eventually pass it on to the next generation.

Justin has a strong appreciation for the outdoors; he enjoys pig hunting, a hobby he’s had for many years. His favorite way to start the day is with a cup of coffee and watching the sunrise.

Updates

What has been most rewarding?

The internship has shown me a different way of doing things. And there are a lot of things I can take home that I've learned here. The gate levers, I'm going to take one home so I can make some more like it.

What have you grown to appreciate about the Sandhills?

I've come to appreciate the simplicity of the Sandhills. We're kind of secluded, but the folks are nice out here. I like the mule deer and the flowers. It's a beautiful thing, seeing all the different colors. It's nice to see some new country up here, it's beautiful.

Future plans:

Justin plans to return to his cattle ranch in Texas, where he intends to implement new management practices he learned at the Downing Ranch and during the Young Adult Ranching for Profit seminar. He believes these practices will improve the overall efficiency of his operation.
