Enhancing grassland ecosystems while sustaining private, profitable ranching
Erika Cast
Bow and Arrow Ranch
Erika Cast is from Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. She is a student at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where she studies Animal Science as part of the Beef Industry Scholars program. This summer, she is working at Bow and Arrow Ranch near Valentine.
Erika applied for the Sandhills Ranch Internship Program because of her passion for working with cattle and her desire to gain experience on a larger scale. She hopes to learn more about ranch management and acquire practical skills that she can eventually bring back to her family's farm.
Growing up in a farming family surrounded by cattle, Erika developed a strong interest in agriculture. Her experience includes a variety of roles in the field, such as working at a feedyard, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) Beef Unit, and the UNL Animal Science Department. Through these positions, she has expanded her knowledge in several areas, including feeding and caring for livestock, managing calving responsibilities, operating equipment, processing cattle, and assisting with livestock management.
She looks forward to gaining hands-on ranch experience and furthering her understanding of the cattle industry through the Sandhills Ranch Internship Program.
