Clayton Williams

Cheyenne Valley Ranch

Clayton Williams, from Meigs County in southeast Ohio, is currently attending Oklahoma State University, where he is studying farm and ranch management. This summer, he will be interning at the Cheyenne Valley Ranch near Arthur.

Clayton grew up in a secluded valley in Appalachia on a 100-acre property that stretched from powerline to powerline. His childhood was spent outdoors—fishing the family pond, riding trails, and hunting the hillsides. While he did not grow up in an agricultural background, he developed a strong work ethic by helping care for the property and by staying involved in sports.

His interest in agriculture developed near the end of his military contract. Clayton began thinking more seriously about his future and the kind of life he wanted to build. The people he spent time with often had cattle or horses, and he realized that ranching was something he could pursue with effort and determination. That realization sparked a growing interest in agriculture and conservation.

Clayton applied for the Sandhills Ranch Internship Program because he saw it as an opportunity that fit his goals and his desire to learn. He looks forward to working alongside others who are passionate about continuing a tradition of ranching while spending time in the Nebraska Sandhills.

This summer, Clayton is particularly excited to continue developing his skills in handling and caring for livestock. He is eager to learn about various fencing systems and how to repair them. He values hands-on experience and looks forward to spending long days outside working with cattle and horses, as well as evening roping sessions with the ranch crew. Clayton hopes to acquire practical knowledge that will support his future goals in ranching.

A unique aspect of Clayton's background is his military experience. He believes that the discipline and perspective he gained during that time have shaped who he is and influence how he approaches challenges and opportunities. His favorite quote reflects this mindset: "Show up at the right time, in the right uniform, with the right attitude, and you can do anything."

Looking ahead, Clayton hopes to one day work on a family-owned ranch where he can build a small operation of his own, with horses and a herd of cattle to support his family.

This summer, Clayton is looking forward to learning, gaining experience, and making the most of his time at Cheyenne Valley Ranch.
